Construction of the Buddhist Complex of the Lanna Buddha
Statue
(Buddhist diocese of Lanna: Sacred
place of Lanna Thai)
“The unifying power of Thai Buddhists”
History of the creation of the Lanna Buddha Statue
Thailand has endured many serious problems over the past
three years such as violence in Thailand’s three southern borderprovinces,
political and economic turmoil, and natural disasters which caused Thai people
everywhere to suffer. Master Warin Buaviratlerd, from the Vihara of Luangpu,
Sukito Village in Chiangmai, in collaboration with disciples and the Royal Thai
Army as protectors of the Kingdom, joined to create a brass ‘Lanna Buddha
Statue’, 99 inches wide at the lap in the
gesture of subduing Mara, on December 22nd, 2007.
The creation of the Lanna Buddha image was aimed to give
moral support to Thai people as they strive to subdue evil, both internal and
external. It was also intended to summon the merit and virtues of the Buddha,
accumulated for all eternity, in the struggle to defeat suffering, and bring
peace and prosperity to the Kingdom of Thailand. The Commander-in-Chief and
representatives of the Royal Thai Army presided over the statue’s creation
ceremony. At present, the creation process has been completed and the Buddha
Statue has been transferred to the Buddhist complex of the Lanna Buddha Statue.

Merit in constructing the Buddhist Complex of the Lanna
Buddha Statue
(Buddhist diocese of Lanna, Chiangmai
Province)
As merit for our contribution to the construction of the
Buddhist complex of the Lanna Buddha Statue, history will remember that the
Buddhist complex was completed out of our deep faith and selfless donations,
without the need for government funding. The results of this merit will bring
peace, prosperity and harmony to our beloved country, and ease conflicts and
suffering among the Thai people.
After construction has been completed, Master Warin
Buaviratlerd and disciples from the Vihara of Luangpu will dedicate the
Buddhist complex of the Lanna Buddha Statue as a national heritage, and
organize a grand inauguration in traditional Thai-Lanna style. This Buddhist
complex of the Lanna Buddha Statue will be under Royal Thai Army patronage and
serve as a lasting symbol of the unifying power of Thai Buddhists.

Architectural Style and details of the Buddhist complex of
the Lanna Buddha Statue
The Buddhist complex (Kuang’ in Northern Thai dialect) of
the Lanna Buddha Statue is situated in the entrance area of Huai Tueng-Thau
Reservoir, Mae-rim District, Chiangmai Province. This sacred place, in Lanna
architectural style, occupies approximately 12 acres (30
rai). With its refined and splendid Thai-Lanna craftsmanship, the Buddhist
complex of the Lanna Buddha Statue is intended to serve as a holy place for
religious activities for Thai-Lanna Buddhists and other virtuous men and women.
The Buddhist Complex of the Lanna Buddha Statue is composed
of:
1. The Court – the court is used for
Buddhist activities, such as candlelit processions, sermons, and other merit
making ceremonies.
2. The Lanna Buddha Statue – a brass
Buddha Statue, 99 inches at its widest in the gesture
of subduing Mara, rests, facing west, on a 5-meter high altar in the
portal arch decorated with traditional Lanna motifs. Behind the portal arch are
the Sri MahaBodhi tree and the Court connecting to the Lanna Museum, which
houses the Tripitaka texts and Lanna historical texts. The court in front of
the Lanna Buddha Statue is encircled by low boundary walls and 409
Buddha images for the days of the week, each 9 inches wide, and with the
names of the benefactors engraved at the bottom. It is believed that the
benefactors who have provided for the Buddha images were actually chosen to
protect this Buddhist complex until the Buddhist religion is 5000
years old or until they achieved Nirvana. The benefactors who contribute to the
creation of the Buddhist complex obtain merit that will lead them into the
heaven once they leave this earth.
3. The Shrine of the Lanna Buddha
Statue and four Buddha’s footprints – Shrine, in Lanna architectural style,
measures 10 x 10 x 19.9
meters. It is made of bricks covered with gold leaf and with four gable ends.
The Buddha’s relics are placed at the top of the Shrine, while the four
footprints of the Buddha (duplicated from Wat Prabuddhabath-Si-Roi, Mae-rim
District, Chiangmai Province) are found inside the Shrine. Ninety-nine Buddha
images for the days of the week, each 9 inches wide, encircle the
upper wall inside the Shrine, and twelve Buddha images for the years of the
Chinese zodiac (Phra-That), each 1 x 1
x 1.30 meters and modeled after the original Buddha images
(Phra-That), are located in the outer court, which is surrounded by flower
gardens.
4. The Alms Bowl Pavilion – In Lanna
architectural style, the Alms Bowl Pavilion is made of brick, covered with gold
leaf and decorated with tinted glass. Inside the Pavilion, there are nine
Buddha images for the days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Wednesday night, Thursday, Thursday night, Friday, and Saturday. Each lifesize
statue is placed on a glass altar in Thai-Lanna Style. The construction of all
nine Buddha images was made possible through the contributions of benefactors
selected by Master Warin on the basis of a vision by Luangpu Kewalan.
5. Place of the Buddha’s biography –
Here one learns of the Buddha’s birthplace, his enlightenment, where he
preached his first sermon, and where he achieved Nirvana. From the Buddhist
complex, eight columns, representing the Noble Eightfold Path, lead first to
the Pavilion of Birth and the Court of enlightenment, where a 59-inch
wide Buddha Statue in the posture of preaching a sermon is placed under a
portal arch in traditional Lanna style. The columns lead on to the Pavilion of
Nirvana where a 5-meter long Reclining Buddha Statue
made of mortar and gilded in gold leaf, rests on a one-meter high glass altar,
under a Sal of India tree, which according to legend, is where the Buddha
entered Nirvana.
6. Pavilion of Dhamma and Anodard Pond
– The northern area of the Buddhist complex of the Lanna Buddha Statue has been
set aside as the location for a pilgrims’ Dhamma Retreat. It is also decorated
in Lanna architectural style and houses a 59-inch wide Buddha Statue in
the posture of preaching a sermon. The statue rests on a glass altar placed
under the portal arch inside this pavilion. The Great pond “Anodard” is also
found outside the pavilion.
7. View point and low boundary walls –
The view point square is found on the east side of the Buddhist complex,
completely encircled by low boundary walls.
8. Health Garden and Exercise
Zone – This area has been planned by
Master Warin Buaviratlerd for as a place to relax and exercise. There is sport
equipment, a service center, food and drink shops, and a bicycle rental shop
available to the public.
